2. Project description and Aim
Industrial air emissions are one of the most important environmental challenges of the last decades. The emitted compounds, often VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), are very toxic, representing a severe hazard for humans and the Environment. Ozonation and catalysis are very efficient treatment techniques that also greatly contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. However, these technologies are relatively young in the market and not fully operational at a full-scale. Further strategic R&D is needed prior a market breakthrough.
The candidate will perform experimental tests to evaluate adsorption media for VOC reduction applications. The performance of the different materials will be investigated, with great emphasize on lifetime and LCA (Life-cycle assessment). The synergy between ozone and the tested samples will be included, evaluating benefits in terms of operational costs and energy efficiency. The project will be carried out using an existing lab test rig, after starting up the system. Fresh and spent samples will be analyzed with characterization techniques, if required.

This project will include the following:
• Literature survey and samples selection
• Test rig startup
• Experimental tests with characterization
• Evaluation of ozonation effect
• Thesis writing

4. Personal profile
Candidate profile:
• Chemical or environmental engineering
• Business-oriented mind
• Prior experience with catalysts synthesis and testing is an advantage
Expected scope: 20 weeks, 30 HP/credits
Expected start: Spring 2020
